The Instrument · the equation, read

It is not a metaphor.
It is an instrument.

Most companies treat v=d/t as a slogan. We treat it as a measuring instrument — one that reads a real position, fixes a real destination, and returns a real velocity. This is how the instrument works, and how a reading is taken.

v=d/t
The Outcome
v · Velocity

The rate your true position changes — measured against the destination, never the effort. A vector: speed with direction. Fifteen knots toward the wrong port is still lost.

The Input
d · Displacement

The straight-line gap from where you are to where you must be — direction included. Not distance (total path travelled). Displacement (the direct measure to the port).

The Variable
t · Time

The one term AI collapses. What took a team and a quarter now takes a system and a week. Reduce t, hold d, and velocity is what remains.

The distinction the whole instrument rests on

Displacement, not distance.

Distance is the path travelled — effort, activity, motion. Displacement is the straight line to the destination, with bearing. Most organisations are proud of their distance and blind to their displacement. The instrument measures only the line that closes the gap.

How position is fixed

A fix is taken from six sightings.

A navigator never fixes position from one star. The instrument triangulates from six sightings — each scored where you are now against where your role requires you to be. Where they cross is the fix.

I · Judgement
Tell good from bad

Can you tell strong AI output from weak — in your own domain? Do you know when to trust it?

II · Direction
Set the brief

Can you frame a problem so a system can run it — decompose the work, set the course?

III · Operation
Hold the wheel

Can you actually run the tools and build, hands-on — or only commission the work?

IV · Leverage
Reduce your own t

Do you redesign your own workflow around it — not just delegate it downward?

V · Literacy
Know the range

Do you understand the capabilities, the limits, the cost, and the risk?

VI · Adaptation
Re-fix as it moves

How fast do you re-learn as the tools change? Will the fix still hold a year on?

What a reading delivers

The reading, and the chart.

A reading is a structured diagnostic that produces one object: a displacement chart — your present fix, your chosen port, the bearing between them, and the time the instrument can remove. The chart is plotted by a navigator, not generated by a form.

i
The sightings

Evidence from three sources — a self-assessment, real work samples, and a live exercise on a task from your own week. The live sighting is the one that cannot be performed.

ii
The fix

The six sightings triangulate a present position and a required port. Displacement is the straight line between them; its bearing tells you what the work actually is.

iii
The chart

An engraved displacement chart, delivered. Re-taken at each standing watch, the velocity between readings becomes a line you can see — displacement closed over time.

Every crossing begins
with a reading.
